Sambar



Sambar is a hot and spicy lentil soup with mixed vegetables .It is a best accompaniment for popular South Indian breakfast and lunch recipes like Idli, Dosa or steamed rice.It's a  must have recipe in  South Indian Sadhya(feast).

You can make it with ready made sambar powder but which is not healthy.We can easily  make the sambar powder at home itself .

To make Sambar Powder


Ingredients and Measurements Used
    • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
    • 1/2 tsp Fenugeek seeds
    • 1 tsp Whole red dry chilly
    • 1/2 tsp Asofoetida powder
    • 1 tsp Toor dal(Split Pigeon Peas)
    • 1tsp Black gram dal
    • 1 tsp Urad dal
    • 3 tsp Coriander seeds
    Method
    Dry roast all the ingredients separately in a pan.Keep them aside until it becomes cool.After that grind all of them together in a mixer grinder or blender. Sambar Powder  is ready.You can keep it an airtight container.

    To make Sambar

    Ingredients and Measurements Used
      • 1/3 cup  Toor dal
      • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
      • 1 cup mixed chopped vegetables( Brinjal,Carrot,Drumstick,Okra )



      • 1  tomato sliced
      • 1tsp seedless tamarind 
      • 1 tsp sambar powder
      •  Salt to taste
      For seasoning
      • 1 tsp oil
      • 1 tsp mustard seed
      • 3 whole dried chilly
      • 6-7 curry leaves

      For garnishing
      • 1 tsp finely chopped  coriander leaves
      Method

      1.Soak tamarind with 3 tsp of hot water for 15 mints  and mash it with spoon       and strain it using a sieve  to make tamarind juice.
      2.Add toor dal,turmeric powder and 1 cup of water  in a pressure cooker and       cook for 2-3 whistles.
      3.Turn off the flame and allow it to stand until the pressure comes down                naturally.
      4.Open the lid and put the vegetables inside it and mix it with cooked dal and        add 1 cup of water and cook it for 10 minutes with the lid on and without the      pressure cooker weight.
      5.Now open the lid and add tomato , salt ,tamarind juice and sambar powder        and allow it to cook for another 2-3 minutes.
      6.Turn off the flame.
      7.For seasoning heat 1 tsp of oil in a pan.Add the mustard seeds.When it crackle    add the dried chilly and curry leaves and saute for 5 seconds.Turn off the            flame.
      8.Pour the seasoning into the prepared curry and mix well.
      9. Sambar is ready. Transfer it into a serving bowl and garnish with coriander        leaves
